If you are an active family, or you have active kids who love exploring, it’s important they have a good pair of walking shoes or boots which will keep their feet dry, supported and stable.
At Hirst Footwear, we have a great range of outdoor shoes and boots to choose from, perfect for the kids who love being out and about.
What is the difference between a walking shoe and a walking boot?
Walking boots can generally be categorised by their higher collars, something in which walking shoes do not have. If you are walking on rugged terrain and uneven surfaces, then walking boots are likely to be a much better choice.
Walking shoes are usually much more lightweight and should be worn on more stable terrains. Walking shoes are also much more suited to shorter walks, typically when the weather is dry, although we know this can’t be predicted in the UK!
Do kids need walking boots?
If you’re an active family who enjoys exploring the outdoors, it’s a good idea to get your kids a pair of walking boots.
Walking boots can provide great stability for their ankles, which helps to prevent falls and sprains from occurring. They also provide great traction compared to shoes like trainers, which is vital, especially when you and your kids are going to be walking on a variety of different surfaces.
What makes a good hiking shoe for kids?
Listed below are some of the most important characteristics of hiking shoes for kids.
Fit
The fit of hiking shoes is critical. No matter how well a hiking shoe is made, it will not function properly if it doesn’t fit correctly.
Make sure your kids feet feel comfortable in the shoe, it shouldn’t be too tight or too loose, but there should ideally be enough room for your kids to wear some thick socks if necessary.
Traction
Traction is how well the shoes are resistant to slipping. Some of the most frequent injuries whilst hiking are caused by slips on foreign substances, such as water, ice, sand and mud. This is why it is vital your kids have a pair of hiking boots that have excellent traction on the out soles.
Breathability
Conventional hiking shoes do not provide a great level of breathability, and this can cause a lot of discomfort, especially in warmer climates. This can result in skin issues, blisters and sores.
Look for shoes which are made with synthetic fibres and patches of leather. This not only decreases the weight of the shoe, but makes it breathable and washable.
Cushioning
Cushioning is the ability to absorb shock. When you’re looking for walking shoes, look for those which state they are shock absorbing.
EVA and PU are the most widespread materials for hiking shoes midsoles, and these are the materials which provide the shock absorption by decreasing shearing.
